Joe Hannon and Bill Schneider with the National Weather Service, Portland, OR set up a remote weather station in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area.

The rain gage used here is a type known as a "tipping bucket rain gage" and it measures rainfall in 0.01 inch increments. The total rain is tallied and transmitted once an hour.
